How to Post to Two Separate Del.icio.us Accounts Easily

If you maintain two separate del.icio.us accounts (one personal account and one for a business or web site), you know how difficult del.icio.us can be to use if you are having to switch usernames all of the time. Essentially, everytime you want to post a site to the other del.icio.us account you have to logoff, and enter your other username and password.

I know what you are thinking:

But you aren’t supposed to use del.icio.us like that. Just create one account and tag personal stuff as personal and business/site stuff as business.

I think there are some good reasons for having separate del.icio.us accounts. For example, if your del.icio.us links are recommendations to your users/readers, you might not want them to think you are endorsing all of the crazy sites you post to your personal account. No matter whether or not your reasons for having two del.icio.us accounts are ‘good’ reasons, maintaining two accounts is cumbersome if you don’t have some good tools. To overcome the nuisance of re-logging into del.icio.us all of the time, I have devised this simple “hack” (if you will). Ok, so it’s not really a hack, but let’s just pretend.

There are multiple firefox extensions for del.icio.us, and if you have two del.icio.us extensions installed you can set them to post to different accounts. So, simply install:

del.icio.us buttons provided by del.icio.us

del.icio.us complete extension from the Firefox Addons page

The idea is that you will remain logged in under one user, so that you can post to that account with the browser buttons provided by del.icio.us. The browser buttons provided by del.icio.us will always post to the account you are currently logged in under. So, if you log out of the del.icio.us account that you have set up with the del.icio.us browser buttons provided by del.icio.us, you need to log back in in order to post sites to that account.

Using the Options…/ Accounts tab in del.icio.us complete, set the second button to post to your other account. Voila!

Del.icio.us complete does allow users to select which account they post a link to. I’ve stuck with the two separate browser buttons because I don’t have to select which account to post to; I just click the right del.icio.us brower button. Works for me.

Hey Charles,

Try going to View > Toolbars > Customize on your Firefox menu. Look for a del.icio.us icon in the list of icons and drag-n-drop that icon to your navigation toolbar.

I have downloded the Firefox extension and I’m puzzled as to how to get the button shown in the blog. The download did not create a button in my Firefox browser. I’ve restarted Firefox and my computer. The shortcut keys work and I get the pop up box that allows me to toggle between accounts.

How do I turn on the button on my toolbar?

Good point. I definitely use that feature sometimes. But Step 4 is the annoying part. I don’t like logging into the other account and accepting the links. Additionally, you have to save them as private if you don’t want to display them on one account and delete them later if you don’t want them on that accout at all.

Another easy way to post to a work-specific or blog-specific del.icio.us account is this:

1. Create a personal account and a separate account for your blog, work or network.

2. Log in under your personal account and add the work account to your del.icio.us network.

3. When you want to tag something for the work account, use the for:workaccount tag to save it for that account.

4. To activate the tagged bookmarks, you’ll still have to occasionally log in to the work account and save them, but it’s still a pretty good way to specifiy which bookmarks go where without having to manage two simultaneous logins.

Make it Three !

You can use OnlyWire’s bookmarklet and post to yet another del.icio.us account!

http://www.onlywire.com/

Only Wire can post to multiple bookmarking engines including del.icio.us … you have to login to OnlyWire account but not into the corresponding del.icio.us account.

Nice information. But, what is so useful about del.icio.us, that people would want to have accounts with? I know it’s popular, but what’s the benefits?

This is a good point. Del.icio.us complete will let you post to multiple del.icio.us accounts, but you have to select the account on the pop-up menu everytime. If selecting the menu doesn’t bother you, just use del.icio.us complete. Typing in tags is pretty much all I want to do when I am marking a site, but that’s just me!

Kevin,
Trying Flock is on my list of things to do. The folks at Flock should advertise this feature better on their site. I know I would have been more inclined to try the browser because of that feature.

mrgn,
Install both del.icio.us firefox extensions (links provided above). Use one extension to post to your “personal” del.icio.us account and the other extension to post to your “website’s/professional” del.icio.us account. Sorry about the confusion; my writing wasn’t clear.

You spend the majority of the article explaining the problem and then one sentence on the answer? I had to read it a few times to understand it and without visual aids it’s still confusing. Sorry.

If you are on Mac, you may want to check out Pukka. It lets you do multiple accounts with great ease, including posting in the background and integration with Growl. Watch the screencast for the full effect. Feedback is welcome!
